Family Farm Turns Unused Buildings into a New Income Stream

Farm diversification continues to play an increasingly important role within British agriculture, as many families look at ways to create additional income alongside their existing farming operations.

For one family farm in Herefordshire, several traditional buildings that were once central to the farm were no longer suitable for modern agricultural use.

Rather than allowing these buildings to remain unused, the family identified an opportunity to convert them into commercial units for local businesses.

The project offered a way to protect the character of the buildings while generating a new income stream to support the farm.

The farming business remained the priority, but diversification created an opportunity to strengthen the overall operation for future generations.

As with many projects of this type, investment was required before the new enterprise could begin producing income.

After reviewing the customer’s plans and understanding the wider farming business, Alchemy Business Finance supported the project with a £185,000 funding facility.

Dean Pollen, Managing Director of Alchemy Business Finance Ltd, said:

“Diversification has become an important part of the conversation around the future of farming.

In many cases, farmers are not looking to replace agriculture — they are looking at ways to protect and strengthen the core farming business.

Many farms have opportunities within existing buildings, land or resources, but turning those opportunities into reality requires careful planning.”

The project allowed the family to bring unused buildings back into productive use while creating additional long-term income.
