Agricultural contractors often operate within narrow seasonal windows where machinery reliability directly affects both profitability and customer service.
For one contracting business based in Pembrokeshire, preparations for the autumn hedge-cutting season centred on replacing equipment that had become increasingly expensive to maintain.
The business provides hedge cutting, verge maintenance, topping and vegetation management services for local farms, estates and rural landowners. Demand had continued to grow, but ageing equipment was resulting in increased maintenance costs and occasional downtime during busy periods.
To improve reliability and increase productivity, the contractor identified a replacement McConnel PA6565 telescopic hedge cutter complete with heavy-duty flail head and updated hydraulic control system.
The investment, totalling approximately £68,000, would allow longer working days, improved cutting performance and reduced maintenance requirements throughout the busiest months of the year.
As with many contracting businesses, preserving cashflow remained an important consideration. Fuel costs, staff wages and ongoing maintenance all increase significantly during peak operating periods.
Following discussions with their commercial finance broker, the proposal was introduced to Alchemy Business Finance.
Having reviewed both the equipment and the operational requirements of the business, Alchemy arranged an asset finance facility that enabled the contractor to secure the machinery before the seasonal workload commenced.
Agricultural contractors continue to play an increasingly important role across UK farming, with many farmers choosing to outsource specialist operations rather than investing in equipment that may only be used for a limited number of days each year.
As demand for contracting services grows, investment in reliable machinery becomes essential to maintaining service standards while maximising productivity during relatively short operating windows.
Dean Pollen, Managing Director of Alchemy Business Finance, said:
“Contractors are supporting farms across the country with highly specialised equipment, and timing is everything. If machinery isn’t available when the work needs to be carried out, opportunities can quickly be lost.”
“Working closely with brokers enables us to understand the business, the equipment being purchased and the importance of completing funding within the timescales required.”
For commercial finance brokers, agricultural contractors continue to represent an important and growing sector. Many businesses invest regularly in specialist equipment, making an understanding of seasonal trading patterns and machinery values an increasingly valuable part of supporting rural clients.
As farming businesses continue to focus on efficiency and flexibility, demand for professional contracting services shows little sign of slowing, creating ongoing funding opportunities for brokers with clients operating across the agricultural sector.
